Cycling is definitely one of the best ways to sightsee in Hakuba Valley, and for those with limited time, a mountain bike tour can take in the very best of Hakuba in a short time. We took time out recently to go on a half day tour with Rike MTB that included a ride and a pizza making experience. This tour is excellent even for those who have never road a mountain bike before.
Tours start at either Reposer in central Hakuba, or Iimori ski resort to the south. After a quick explanation in the car park, we are on our way.
A quick ride to the Happo area and we stop at the stone statues and Hosono Shrine. Our guide gives us the history of the area, and once again we are surprised about how little we know about our local town.
Next we head off to Hakuba Ohashi Bridge, where you can enjoy one of the best views of the Northern Japanese Alps (weather permitting of course). Here the guide explains that this river, the Matsukawa River, has long been a source of Jade for the area. For more info on this see our recent trip to the Jade Gorge.
From here we head off through the rice paddies and soba fields before heading back to Reposer for lunch. Lunch on this tour is a self made Pizza, where you choose your own toppings and make the Pizza yourself.
The total length of the bike ride was about 10km, and there is an option for an electric bicycle for those who do not feel able to ride this distance on a regular mountain bike.
Note that this tour is in Japanese only, but hopefully more languages will be available in the future.
